Carlos Palomino

Born into poverty in Mexico, Carlos Palomino overcame astronomical odds to become a world champion boxer and television and movie actor. Carlos rose to fame in the 1970s as a fierce and talented boxer who held the WBC Welterweight World Championship for years and was inducted into the International Boxing Hall of Fame.

But his untold true story of hard work, determination and a never-give-up attitude is about to become a Hollywood motion picture. It is an inspirational tale of perseverance that audiences of all ages and backgrounds will enjoy, as we see how Carlos Palomino became a true champion, both inside and outside of the ring.

Against all odds

In the Hollywood motion picture Palomino, this boxing legend’s true story comes to the big screen. Born into an impoverished village in Mexico, the odds were stacked against Carlos from the beginning. Born into in a tiny house with dirt floors and no electricity or running water, Carlos was very sick from a young age.

Learn why his mother dressed him as a girl until he was seven years old. See how nothing Carlos could do as a child was ever good enough for his tough disciplinarian father. Watch how he learned to survive on the tough streets of Mexico, before his family legally immigrated to the United States when Carlos was 10 years old.

The Story

College Degree, U.S. Citizen, Army and AAU Champion

Carlos worked hard and tirelessly, driven to win the approval of his father, and became a college graduate and a U.S. citizen. Despite being forced to fight in the streets as a youngster, Carlos took to boxing once he joined the U.S. Army and proudly worked his way up the amateur ranks to become the national AAU champion and the two-time U.S. Army Champion. In the film, learn why Carlos was the favorite to represent the United States on the Olympic boxing team, but was passed over for a boxer he had twice beaten. Also learn how Carlo’s father still was not satisfied, imploring Carlos to always “do more, do better.”

Carlos Turns Pro, Becomes World Champion - and a TV and Movie Star

After a promising start to his professional boxing career, a series of unlikely events led to Carlos being offered a WBC World Welterweight Title fight at Wembley Stadium in London against the world champion – Great Britain’s John Stracey. Learn how Carlos, a huge underdog, knocked Stracey out in front of his home crowd with a vicious body attack. As the new world champion, the film explores how Carlos became a hot commodity in Hollywood also – appearing in movies, television shows and one of the most iconic TV commercials of all time. Keeping a promise to his mother, Carlos retired from boxing before turning 30 after a successful reign as world champion. But was this enough for Carlos’ father to be proud of his son?

Tragedy Strikes

Paul Palomino was Carlos’ youngest brother and wanted to follow in his older brother’s footsteps. Paul was a promising fighter and eventually made his way through the amateur ranks to become a member of the 1980 U.S. Olympic boxing team. The film explores the loving relationship between the two brothers, and how Paul decided to postpone turning pro when Carlos convinced him to box for their country first, something Carlos was not given the chance to do.  The motion picture explores the tragic events that lead to Paul’s death in a plane crash, and the devastation and grief this caused Carlos. On top of this, Carlos’ father falls ill and passes away, leaving Carlos wondering if he ever did enough to satisfy his father.

Redemption

The deaths of his brother and father took a toll on Carlos. At age 47, nearly two decades after retiring from the ring, Carlos returns to the one thing he, his brother and his father truly loved – boxing. The film explores the incredible story of redemption as Carlos finally comes to peace with the loss of his brother and father during a fantastic occurrence during his unlikely comeback. Learn how this true Hall of Fame boxer defied all odds, and his age, in a rousing bout against another former world champion still in his boxing prime.
